We’ve brought some changes to the club after working on the members feedbacks during our break before the new year. We will start to apply them this coming Saturday by setting a team, from the members, to lead the meeting. Most of the changes are related to our weekly meetings, they aim at getting closer to what the members want and of course giving them chances to be up front.

From this coming Saturday then, a team, from the members will lead the whole meeting. Its mission is to find games, lead the discussion upon a topic that they normaly have chosen. We believe that belonging to a team will help a lot those who are still shy to face a whole bunch of crazy people lol. The team will have a leader and they will manage to share the works to do between them, like grown ups

The discussions will be divided into two parts. The members will be splited into small groups of 6 or 7 people. This is done to make the shy members more confident and talk. They will discuss a topic between them for 15mn and one of the leaders will make sure everybody in the group spoke. This is in the first part. In the second one, we will go back the general talk where everybody is invited to take part in.

The “presentations” already started in 2009 but we’ll have more this year. We’re scheduling three this month. Haingo, Lalah and Sambatra will respectively talk about “Travel”, “Video editing” and “How our brain works”. We will encourage all the members to make up their mind and present something they like to their peers.

The “English Saturday” will comeback and will be held every three months. We thought this frequency will give us much more time to have a better organization. And as usual we will invite other English clubs to join us during this event.

We hope will have more outings this year – something that cruelly lacked us in 2009 – but it will mainly depend on the (political) situation in Madagascar. We won’t take any risk when safety of the members is not sure.

That’s all we can say about news in the club. Other projects and proposals from the members are still on the we-are-thinking-of-it state, they need more reflexion.

That’s it, we left our dear home made blogging system that we’ve been with for about 3 years to WordPress a much better platform in terms of security, usability and maintenance. We also chose WP because now our online most active members are becoming more and more used to it.

What’s new

The core of the ICE website has changed. That means you won’t be able to post news, articles, jokes and so on unless you’re registered. To do so, use the register link in the indentification box on your right and follow what is said.

The forum and the gallery are still on

Only the ICE blog changed to WP, the rest will remain as they are I mean the forum and the photo gallery (which I still need to tune lol – have no time now). Thus, your accounts on ICE are not lost and are still active. They will allow you to log in only on the forums and the gallery though.

What we’ve lost

All comments on articles, news and contributions could not have been moved to WP. I have them on the old DB but I’m still thinking of a good trick to hook them on the right posts.

How Tos and Guides

We’ll put a tutorial section on how to use WP soon.

Tiji, the winner of Pazzapa 2008
[credit:Andriamisa Tophos.com | tsenagasy.com]

Erita and Tiji, the finalists were among the bests in their class and I’m sure a lot of people agree with me to say that both deserved it. Aina Cook will remain as the only representative of the female gender among the Pazzapa winners since its debut 6 years ago. Many were those who believed that this time the award would go to a girl after staying on the other side for 5 years. May be this belief has never been stronger than before because many saw here as the better.
As for me, last Saturday’s performance didn’t look like a “Final”, I’ve seen much better “Prime”. They were not concentrated enough, forgot the lyrics and spoiled some good songs. The choice of Micheal Jackson for the “medley” was awesome but it depicted the whole show, good but could have been a lot better.
I really thought it would be a tight run, that there wouldn’t be a gap between the 2 finalists so I was stunned when I saw that 65% and more of the votes went to Tiji. Bad sms lol.
One of the most exiting moments is no doubt when we’re longing for seeing what the prizes are. Before the start of this year’s Pazzapa, new rules were set and it was said the winner would go home with at least a 20-million-Ariary bill. Little did Tiji know he wouldn’t take that home. I saw a bit of disappointment on he’s face when he knew he won a … 30-million Ariary car (plus gas for a year and a driving class tuition). The runner up, Erita, got 3 million Ariary and can go home riding a brand new scooter.

Yesterday was October 31st. Almost any urban teenager that I met, was a kind of excited. « Come on ! It’s Halloween ! » they all said. What makes this Halloween so special for them, though it’s not even a day off ? Halloween is not a national day, it’s not even a religious day, why do they feel the need to feast it ? Of course, I know that Halloween is a very important day in the U.S., it’s the day (well … let’s say the night) where kids ask for candies and wear fancy clothes. I also know that during Halloween, most of U.S. TV channels broadcast thriller movies, and most of teenagers organize disguised parties. After some research through internet, I discovered that actually Halloween is the All Saints’eve. The first European settlers in North America believed that during this specific moment (the night), all the evil spirits and forces are trying to disturb human beings’ life. It is then the counter-balance of All Saints day. So, … where and what is the connection with Madagascar and its people ? As far as I know, we do not have such custom. Why do Young Malagasy people feel obliged to celebrate it as it is their own culture ? I believe that most of them do not know the real meaning of Halloween. I noticed a very long queue of young guys and girls, all disguised at the night club « LE BUS », I decided to ask one of them about the importance and the meaning of Halloween celebration in Madagascar. He just responded to me like this : « Come on ! We’re young ! We wanna be cool ! Halloween is cool ! That’s why we party during October 31st ! You see, it’s like in movies ! Yo ! » It was obvious for me that these youngsters just wanted to look and to live like their U.S. counterparts. Actually, Halloween has been tremendously popularized throughout the world by U.S. movies. Madagascar also has been hit by this « cultural tsunami » represented by Halloween which was originally, initially an exclusive North American custom. The celebration of Halloween in Madagascar also shows a very important fact : Malagasy teens dream to become American, and all the opportunities to do things like an American (the cliché of American that they see through movies …) are welcomed. Halloween is now a kind of marketing product for USA. They use it to promote their image throughout the world. With their movies, their music, their flashy events, USA is becoming the first cultural power of the world. If it keeps on that way, we, Malagasy people, may end up with a whole generation who will dress like 50 cents, speak like Snoop Doggy Dog, eat exclusively « junk foods », prefer to celebrate the July 04th, rather than June 26th …, and last but not least, who will know nothing about Alahamady but instead, who will never forget to feast Halloween.

This would have never happened without Foko. We already met the BUEC (Barikadimy United English Club) during the BarCamp but didn’t really have the opportunity to talk. At ebit it was different, both clubs had time to know more about each other.

BUEC’s Patrick and ICE’s Volana

We share the same passion of English and this undoubtedly eased the first contact then everything went smoothly. We decided to invite some of them to join our meeting the next day (Saturday) and they agreed as they were also quite curious – I think – to see how we do. The ICE Club received as special guests representatives of BUEC – Patrick and Theo, we would have loved to have Cunie (sorry miss I forgot your blog’s address) as well but due to unforeseen circumstance she couldn’t make it – on Saturday Oct.18, 2008.
The meeting usually starts with a self introduction when we happen to have new faces. Both Theo and Patrick did so and took this opportunity to present the BUEC. Crazy as we are the ICE members didn’t wait long to ask (crazy) questions to the guests. Cool, Toamasina’s guys coped with and played the game. A lot of fun. We kept up with guessing games where Theo was picked up to represent one group, they guy was a bit lost at the beginning lol. In fact, I shouldn’t have made him start first, sorry man We had great time and more over we shared it with great people, what more can we ask for.

Every good thing has an end, our dear guests couldn’t stay till the end, they had to leave us. No matter, we shared a great moment and I’m sure there will be more to come.
It was a real pleasure to have you guys. Thank you so much and hope to see you soon.

A group of girlfriends is on vacation when they see a 5-story hotel with a sign that reads: “For Women Only.” Since they are without their boyfriends and husbands, they decide to go in.

The bouncer, a very attractive guy, explains to them how it works. “We have 5 floors. Go up floor by floor, and once you find what you are looking for, you can stay there. It’s easy to decide since each floor has a sign telling you what’s inside.”

So they start going up and on the first floor the sign reads: “All the men on this floor are short and plain.” The friends laugh and without hesitation move on to the next floor.

The sign on the second floor reads: “All the men here are short and handsome.” Still, this isn’t good enough, so the friends continue on up.

They reach the third floor and the sign reads: “All the men here are tall and plain.”

They still want to do better, and so, knowing there are still two floors left, they continued on up.

On the fourth floor, the sign is perfect: “All the men here are tall and handsome.” The women get all excited and are going in when they realize that there is still one floor left. Wondering what they are missing, they head on up to the fifth floor.

There they find a sign that reads: “There are no men here. This floor was built only to prove that there is no way to please a woman.”

You have to hold onto the lawn to keep from falling off the earth.

Your job is interfering with your drinking.

“How stupid of you! Don’t you know that they just want to peek at your underwear!” her mother yelled.
“ I”m not a dimwit, I know that. I’m smartier than them. So before climbing the tree I took my undie off!!!!!!!!” the little girl said proudly.
